About Us

Patients will be served by one care team, led by one principal doctor, and stay in one bed throughout their patient care journey. A host of multidisciplinary programmes, such as the Well, Integrated Medicine, Surgery, Health Ageing, Rehabilitative Medicine, Psychological Medicine, and Supportive and Palliative Care programmes, look after their needs holistically.

About Alexandra Hospital

Alexandra Hospital operates from the site of the former British Military Hospital, built from 1938 to 1940, and inaugurated in July 1940.

After eight decades and multiple changes of hands, from its nascent days under the British Army, to a 3-year interregnum during the Japanese Occupation, before liberation and return to British rule, until its transition to civilian-led administrations, Alexandra Hospital is now under the long-term stewardship of the National University Health System, a public healthcare cluster in the western region of Singapore.

Currently home to a 326-bedder hospital, Alexandra Hospital will expand and open new facilities and services progressively from 2028. With the construction of new inpatient and outpatient towers, the general hospital will house around 1,300 beds. It will also be co-located with a nursing home that will have around 450 beds.

About Our Heritage Book

‘Alexandra Hospital: A Legacy Of Care’ was officially launched on 15 May 2024, in conjunction with the groundbreaking ceremony for Alexandra Hospital’s redevelopment.

This is the second heritage book published by Alexandra Hospital. The first book was released in 1998, titled ‘Alexandra Hospital: From British Military to Civilian Institution 1938 - 1998’. Written by Dr. Jeffrey Partridge during the later years of the hospital’s first Singaporean administration, its launch coincided with the designating of the hospital as a Historic Site by the National Heritage Board.

When staff of the National University Health System were housed at the former Alexandra House (Block 19A) in 2017, renewed interest in the hospital’s history was noted by the Communications team. Aided with the power of social media, staff from the Communications team began researching and speaking to veterans, gathering stories and material in preparation for this publication.

Alexandra Hospital engaged the services of AsiaPac Books Pte Ltd. With input and guidance from contributing editor A/Prof. Yeo Kang Shua, the team of writers worked from 2019 to 2022, compiling interviews and collecting photos for this endeavour. Unigrow Creative Print Pte Ltd provided printing services for this book.
